Apparently, the guy did wrong things sexually to Mary. It's not as spiked with quotable lines as The Picture of Dorian Gray or The Importance of Being Earnest, but it's still snappy and fun, until it's ruined by a characteristically moral ending (tacked on, one assumes, in order to make the book palatable to Victorian audiences). But that won't stop me from purchasing new books by her. She feels fortunate to be spoiled and protected, and is careful not to dwell on Vladimir’s ruthlessness or the deadly circles he moves in.
